Maldives Bans Israeli Tourists Amid Gaza Conflict
Ban Comes Amid Public Outrage Over Israeli Military Action
Maldives Tourism Minister Confirms Decision
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) - The Maldives government has announced a ban on Israeli passport holders from entering the country, effective immediately.
The decision was made in response to public outrage over Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians.
"We have taken this decision in response to the concerns of our citizens," said Tourism Minister Abdulla Mausoom. "We cannot ignore the suffering that is taking place in Gaza, and we feel that it is our duty to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people."
The ban will affect both tourists and business travelers from Israel. Israelis have been allowed to visit the Maldives, famous for its stunning island atolls, since the country lifted a previous ban on Israeli tourists in 2017.
The Maldives is the latest country to take action against Israel in response to the Gaza conflict. Other countries that have banned Israeli tourists or diplomats include Malaysia, Indonesia, and Pakistan.
