Assistant Referee Under Investigation After Elbowing Liverpool's Robertson
PGMOL and FA to Probe Incident
Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has accused assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis of elbowing him during the club's 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
The extraordinary incident occurred at half-time of the match at Anfield, with Robertson appearing to be struck in the face by Hatzidakis. The refereeing body PGMOL and the Football Association (FA) have announced that they will investigate the matter.
Footage of the alleged incident has been widely shared on social media, showing Hatzidakis appearing to raise his elbow towards Robertson as the players were leaving the pitch. Robertson can be seen reacting angrily to the contact.
This is not the first time that Hatzidakis has been involved in controversy. In 2021, he was criticized for his performance in Arsenal's 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, where he awarded a penalty to Spurs and sent off Arsenal defender Rob Holding.
The investigation by PGMOL and the FA is ongoing, and it is unclear what action, if any, will be taken against Hatzidakis. However, the incident has once again raised questions about the standard of refereeing in the Premier League.
